Historic Victorian Home

The Design Challenge:

The interior of this historic Victorian home was beautifully re-done but the homeowners needed help in assuring their exterior rooms were also fitting to the style of their home and lifestyle.

The home is on a relatively small lot and was cut up with several parking areas, an above ground pool and offered no feeling of separateness from the neighboring houses. The exterior of the home itself also needed updating and there was some consideration for an out-building that could serve as a workshop and second story apartment.

We offered up a better way to allocate the outdoor spaces - lessoning the prominence of the parking areas and better integrating the transition of the interior and exterior of the home. The homeowners wanted an entertaining area that made them feel as though they were on vacation.

A waterfall and pond were incorporated into a large patio area giving them the ultimate ambience for relaxation. While natural stone wall and patio materials would have been preferred, the budget did not allow.

The guest parking area made of "cobblestone" with an arbor entrance to the entertaining area invites you in and separates the two spaces visually.

Seating areas and colorful perennial gardens were designed in strategic areas around the property to give an illusion of more space and privacy.

What is admirable about these homeowners is they installed a good part of the landscape themselves over a period of a few years - proof that having a Master Plan, though installed in stages, will result in a cohesive, professional result that can fit into your budget.
